Be Very Alert! – By Val Hollard (NZ)

THOUGHTS ON DANIEL 11:36-45
I was reading through Daniel and came across 11:44 which tells us that the Antichrist will hear reports from the east and the north which will alarm him. Then I remembered what Jesus told the disciples: there will be wars and rumours of wars but not to be alarmed by them because the end is still to come (Matt 24:6). We know that at the start of Daniel’s 70th week (Dan 9:27), the last 7 years before Jesus returns to take up His millennial reign, there will be wars when the Antichrist appears. We find this in some of the Seals of Revelation 6 too.
I thought it might be interesting to see what people say about wars and rumours so I looked up a number of commentaries and what books I had on Daniel 11. Most had very little to say on the wars of the Antichrist. I wondered how those who believe in a Western European Antichrist turned a king of the North into a “king of the West.” One person suggested that Turkey would join NATO and that would make a western European king a king of the North. At the moment Turkey is stepping up its decades-long bid to become a member of the European Union. But because they blatantly ignore rulings of the European Court of Human Rights, Turkey’s membership may not be realistic in the foreseeable future. Turkish jails and prisons are so packed with people imprisoned for expressing their beliefs, that the government just announced it will be building 228 more prisons over the next five years to accommodate the overflow.
At the moment there is an agreement between Turkey and the EU for Turkey to hold two or three million Syrian refugees back and help them with funding from the EU, and to make access to the EU easier for Turks. The EU has been slack with its contributions and has not been making it easier for Turks to enter Europe. Turkey is getting impatient and could send these millions into Europe.
It is generally agreed that from verse 36 on the king mentioned is the Antichrist. The last mentioned king of the North was Antiochus Epiphanes. I discovered that many Bible expositors believe that in Daniel 11:40, three kings are in mind, North, South and a West one. Apparently this theory is a recent one and creates problems. The king of the North and the western one would both have the same characteristics and fight each other! I don’t find this very satisfactory.
In a plain reading of the text there is a king of the North and a king of the South, though this does not exclude them from having allies in with them. The description of Antiochus IV (v. 21-35, a king of the North) is clearly a prophetic pattern of the coming Antichrist. The historical reality is that it has always been the nations around Israel, all now Muslim, who want to destroy Israel. This is an ancient hatred stemming from Isaac and Ishmael and there won’t be any reconciliation until the Messiah comes.
There is an interesting passage in Isaiah 10:12 which depicts the Antichrist as an Assyrian who will be dealt with after the Lord has finished His work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem. This latter day Assyrian is a globalist as he removes boundaries of nations, and also plunders the wealth of nations. In Daniel 11:42, the Antichrist plunders the riches of Egypt. Egypt has a great store of treasures which were hidden from the Nazis in WW II. Antiochus was from the Seleucid Empire. Both Assyria and the Seleucid Empire covered similar areas across Turkey, Syria and Iraq.
The main reason why people believe in a western Antichrist is because of Daniel 9:26. “The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary.” Roman legions destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 AD. However, these legions at that time had hardly any Roman Italians in them. They consisted mainly of “provincials” who came from surrounding countries, mainly Syria. It was these people who attacked the Temple. Titus strongly opposed the destruction of the Temple, but the legions ignored him. Many scholars agree that the word for “people” here does not mean the kingdom or empire under which the people lived but the people themselves: races, tribes, kindred, relatives, family.
When the Antichrist appears we know that there will be some sort of covenant with Israel. Israel appears to avoid too much trouble as the kings of the North and South battle, but eventually the Antichrist will set himself up in Jerusalem in the new Temple (v. 45). Then follows a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then (Dan 12:1). Jesus repeats this in Matthew 24:21. It is also called the time of Jacob’s trouble (Jer 30:7). It begins midway through the 7 years (Dan 9:27) and is the time when the Antichrist sets up the abomination of desolation in the Temple. This was spoken of by Daniel in his prophetic passage on the king of the North, Antiochus IV (11:31). Jesus warns the Jews that when they see this they are to drop everything and flee to the mountains (Jordan) and find refuge there (Matt 24:15). Some suggest this is why Jordan is somehow protected from the Antichrist’s advances in Daniel 11:41.
There is currently a peace treaty between Israel and Jordan. After Israel captured the Temple Mount in 1967, they gave control of it to Jordan although Israel still controls security on the site.
In Daniel 11, we are given a description of what the Antichrist will be like when he appears. He will place himself above the one true God and blaspheme Him. He will honour a god who loves war and will attack mighty fortresses. He will honour those who acknowledge him. It is puzzling how so many will end up following the Antichrist when he so warlike. But God sends a great delusion (2 Thess 2). In Revelation 13:4, men say, “Who is like the beast? Who can make war against him? And he is given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation.
In the US, Vice President Pence’s wife Karen has come under withering attack because she holds Christian views and is teaching at Immanuel Christian School. Lady Gaga, a cultural icon, has attacked Mike Pence saying, “To Mike Pence, who thinks that it’s acceptable that his wife works at a school that bans LGBTQ, you’re wrong. You’re the worst representation of what it means to be a Christian.” Now a progressive independent school in Washington DC is refusing to play Immanuel Christian School in basketball because of their views on LGBT rights. Apparently some students did not feel safe entering the Christian school and they have decided therefore not to play at Immanuel Christian School at all.
A showdown between religious freedom and transgender privileges is under way in Texas, where six pro-LGBTQ bills are targeting the constitutional rights of Christians. Make no mistake, a time is coming soon when nothing Christian will be tolerated.
New Jersey has become the second state in the US after California to adopt a law that requires schools to teach about LGBT history in a move hailed by civil rights groups as a step toward inclusion and fairness.
The United Methodist Church is next in line to fall to the LGBT agenda. On February 23rd, the Church will unveil its One Church Plan to include active LGBTQ members and remove ‘restrictive language’ regarding same-sex marriage.
Japan’s Supreme Court has upheld a law that effectively requires transgender people to be sterilised before they can have their gender changed on official documents.
“The most important principle of jihad is to fight unbelievers and aggressors… Armed jihad becomes an individual duty for every Muslim.” – From a teaching manual used in Belgian mosques, according to a leaked intelligence report.
After banning Israelis, Malaysia has now been blocked from hosting the Paralympics swimming event.
In Finland, police have been barred from reporting about asylum seeker crimes.
Fifteen UK Christian churches have received threatening letters warning them to stop all services or they will face Islamic bombings and stabbings.
The Irish parliament has advanced a bill that would prohibit commercial activity connected to areas that were outside Israel’s pre-1967 territory. If enacted, it would make Ireland the first European Union nation to criminalise doing business beyond the pre-1967 lines, including eastern Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. Violators could be subject to a fine of almost $285,000 or five years in prison.
A new government has been formed in Beirut. Iran now effectively controls the new Lebanese government via its proxy Hezbollah.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, “injection drug users” outweigh high schoolers by more than 50%.
Globalist Pope Francis has been in the United Arab Emirates. Tens of thousands, including Muslims, attended a papal mass. But the visit was also to highlight coexistence, religious freedom and interfaith relations. The UAE has declared 2019 the “year of tolerance,” bringing together different religions. This March there will be a papal visit to Morocco. The Vatican will forego the traditional papal insignia and instead have a logo with a cross and a crescent. Vatican News says they “are symbols of Christianity and Islam which highlight the inter-religious relation between Christians and Muslims.”
The No. 1 cause of death in the world is abortion, not cancer, drugs or anything else. In 2018 more than 40 million babies were aborted. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo celebrated as he signed the Reproductive Health Act Bill authorising the killing of babies for any reason up to the moment of birth. If that child survives the attempted abortion and is born alive, that child may be murdered on sight by an abortionist to “complete” the abortion.
Wild cheering and thunderous applause erupted in the New York State legislature when the vote was passed. Other States are expected to follow New York’s lead or have already passed similar laws. Liberal leaders of New York lit up the spire at the One World Trade Centre in pink to celebrate the passage of the abortion law. New York has an abortion rate that is twice the national average and nearly 80% of abortions are on African American babies. There is some good news however, the Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed one of the country’s most restrictive abortion bills into law. Thirteen states have ruled that unborn babies are children or persons.
“Christian” abortion supporters have also stepped up their efforts to promote the killing of unborn babies as a “part of God’s plan” and in keeping with Christian doctrine. This new propaganda tactic ranges from street demonstrations by groups of apostate religious leaders who advocate abortion to the widespread publication of pro-abortion videos using children and religious themes.
2 Kings 21 describes how King Manasseh of Judah led the people astray so that they did more evil than the nations the Lord had destroyed before the Israelites. One of his evils was the sacrificing of his own son. Jerusalem was destroyed as a result and the southern kingdom sent into captivity in Babylon. For how long will God tolerate this present killing of innocent babies before he brings judgement?
At the other end of the age range, legalised murder under the euphemism of ‘compassion’ for the sick and dying is increasing too. This increased legalised killing of young, old and the infirm is not about health and compassion, but economics and the desire to reduce the population of the world.
