SIGNS OR NON-SIGNS?
I have written about the Revelation 12 woman before, but considering the number of people following the September 23rd event I’ll give my opinion again. An extremely rare line-up of a number of heavenly bodies will occur centred around the constellation of Virgo. Numerous people on the internet are seeing this as highly significant and connecting it with the woman in Rev. 12 who gives birth to a male child. They say it must be important and many are connecting it with the Rapture. Being rare doesn’t guarantee something has prophetic significance.
The Old Testament explains a lot of the symbolism used in Revelation. It reveals to us who the woman is and what the sun and moon and crown of 12 stars are. Read Genesis 37:9-10. Joseph’s dream indicates that the sun and moon are his parents, Jacob and Rachel, and that the stars are his brothers. So the sign is Israel, and Israel eventually gives birth to a male child, Jesus.
It is a recap of Matthew’s nativity narrative. When Jesus is born, Herod (the dragon) seeks to kill all the Jewish babes, but Jesus escapes to Egypt with His parents. Jesus is now in heaven where He sits at the right hand of God the Father.
Alan Kurschner of Eschatos Ministries does not believe that the ‘heaven’ in Revelation 12:1 refers to the starry sky but rather to the abode of God. Immediately before it at the end of Rev. 11, God’s temple in heaven is opened and the signs of the woman and the dragon that follow in Rev. 12 seem to come from there too. Then Michael’s war with the dragon is obviously in the abode of God too and not in the starry sky. The devil and his angels are finally cleaned out from God’s abode and thrown down to earth. This event is yet to happen.
Importantly, it is clear from Scripture that there will one day be signs in the sky that certainly merit our attention. In Luke 21:25-28 Jesus describes signs in both the sky and on the earth which will let us know that our redemption, the Rapture, is about to happen. These signs are the same ones that are described in Joel 2 and in Revelation 6 and include the blood moon as part of the composite sign.
Many Americans saw Hurricane Harvey as a judgment because people did not observe the ‘warning’ of the eclipse over the US. It is foolish to see every disaster as a specific divine reaction to something. We can expect many more large disasters as we approach the 70th week of Daniel. In recent weeks, huge floods in Nepal, India and Bangladesh have affected over 40 million and killed over a thousand.
Too many Christians are caught up with signs that the Bible does not tell us to look for. An overemphasis on signs could lead people to fall for the signs and wonders when the Antichrist appears. (2 Thess 2:9)
ISLAM RISING IN AUSTRALIA
Australia’s 2016 Census figures reveal that the Muslim population has soared to 600,000, 2.6% of the population, and is now the nation’s most popular non-Christian religion. Many believe that Islam is a judgment on Western nations which are turning rapidly away from God’s laws. Here is some of the latest news from our close neighbour:
The New South Wales branch of Australia’s Labour party has voted to recognize the state of “Palestine.” This motion was affirmed by NSW Labour leaders, led by former Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr, who called the move a “historic shift” and urged the broader Australian Labour party to adopt the position.
A Muslim group has complained to the Australian Federal Police for using the term ‘Islamic-inspired terrorism’ to describe an alleged plot to bomb a passenger plane. Three of the four men arrested during the raids have since been charged.
A Muslim cleric says that Muslims are cleaner and smell better than non-Muslims.
Remarkable details have emerged about a bid to down a plane with a bomb hidden in a Barbie doll that was to have flown from Sydney to the Middle East. The bomb plot was only discovered as passengers’ hand luggage was being weighed. Some 400 people were preparing to board the Etihad Airways flight to Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
In Brisbane, a judge waited to jail a Muslim refugee who had tried to kill his ex-girlfriend with a machete because of concerns that he wouldn’t be able to observe Ramadan, eat halal food and could be taunted while praying.
Australia’s ex-human rights commissioner Gillian Triggs says that Sharia law courts should be allowed in Australia – just as the Vatican already influences everyday life. Professor Triggs also said Sharia divorce courts should be allowed under a system where a Muslim man can leave his wife by saying “I divorce you” three times and a woman’s word is worth less than a man’s. “If it’s a matter of private law within the Muslim community and they want to manage their affairs in that way, and they believe in those rules, that’s reasonably acceptable,” she said. When Sharia courts were established in Britain they were supposed to only cover private matters on a voluntary basis and criminal matters would be referred to the British courts. This did not happen, especially in cases of spousal abuse.
In Muslim enclaves of southwest Sydney, Christians are regularly warned not to wear overtly Christian symbols such as crucifixes. One Australian man of Greek Orthodox heritage, who did not heed the warning, wore a large cross while traveling on a train with his girlfriend. Suddenly four young men of “Middle Eastern” appearance violently ripped the crucifix from around his neck, threw it to the ground and stomped on it, while cursing Jesus” and making references to “Allah.” They then punched and kicked him, including in the face. When his girlfriend attempted to defend him, two Arabic-speaking women attacked her. Five uniformed railway transport officers apparently stood by idly watching the attack. According to a local Orthodox priest, “This is not an isolated incident. There are gangs of these young fellows of Muslim background who have been harassing people they identify as Christian… You don’t hear about it because no one’s reporting it.” He said there have been at least three other similar attacks around public transport in southwest Sydney recently: “It’s like their territory; they don’t want Christians or other types of infidels there…”
An Islamic State fighter in Syria has called upon fellow Australians to join the fight with Muslim extremists against the ‘crusader’ government in the Philippines. Mounir also urged Australian Muslims unable to join fighting in the Philippines and Syria to “inflict terror against the kufar [infidels]” and “punish them for their crimes against the Muslims.”… “If you are a tradesman, use your nailgun. If you’re a truck driver, ram their crowds until their streets run with their filthy blood.” “Or, pour petrol over their houses while they’re asleep and engulf their houses with flames.”
- Auckland University students have voted to abolish the Pro Life Club at the university. About 1600 were in favour and about 1000 against. The AUSA is seeking legal advice regarding concerns raised by members. Auckland Students for Choice spokeswoman Justine Rose, who was also a member of Campus Feminist Collective, said ProLife had been an “embarrassment for AUSA for a long time.”
- Eva Brunne, the Bishop of Stockholm and the world’s first openly lesbian bishop, has proposed that a church in her diocese remove all signs of the cross and instead put down markings showing the direction to Mecca for the benefit of Muslim worshippers.
- Suicide car bombs are causing a spike in civilian deaths, according to a report by the NGO Action on Armed Violence. Since 2011, when they started to keep worldwide statistics on the issue, the increase of civilian deaths from suicide car bombs has risen 148%, with the total number of deaths over the five years at a staggering 211,000. Overall, most of the increase has come from ISIS’s systematic use of suicide car bombs in Syria and Iraq, with them asserting they used 815 bombs in 2016 alone.
- The European Union’s counter-terrorism coordinator, Gilles de Kerchove, has “singled out the UK as having more radicalised Muslims than any other country in Europe,” with as many “35,000 fanatical Islamists.” France has around 17,000, he says, and other areas of Europe, “tens of thousands.” There are now more than 50,000 jihadists posing as migrants living in Europe.
- Tesla founder Elon Musk has launched Neuralink Corp. to create technology that will merge a human brain with a computer. Neuralink has taken steps to sell as much as $100 million in stock to fund the development.
- Many will be familiar with photoshopping which enables the editing of photos in such a way that it is hard to tell if it is what the camera originally captured or some digitally created lie like changing the background of a holiday photo to make friends think you have been somewhere you haven’t. Now there is technology that does a similar thing with speech. A person can appear to say almost anything. It will be hard for listeners to tell whether the sound is real or fake.

AS IN THE DAYS OF LOT
In California, concerned mothers and fathers flooded a school board meeting in response to a Kindergarten teacher that introduced a student to her class as transgender without notifying parents. Now, another parent at the same school is outraged that her child was sent to the principal’s office for ‘misgendering’ a male classmate who now identifies as a girl.
In Australia, a group of psychologists has released a guide urging parents and teachers to be supportive of children questioning their gender identity and to back gay marriage
A video from Europe shows how boys are taught to wear girls’ clothes, to call children “it” instead of he or she, and four-year-olds are given kits to teach that no one is born one gender or the other. Seventh-graders receive questionnaires with questions such as “Do you believe heterosexuality is a passing phase which you’ll overcome?” Another question asks, “Is it possible that your heterosexuality is the result of a neurotic fear of people of the same gender as you?”
In California a bill is now moving through the Assembly which could threaten jail time, if it becomes law, for anyone who refuses to use a transgender person’s preferred pronoun. The California Senate has already passed SB179, which would introduce a third gender option for state identification. Currently, driver’s licenses and other forms of official identification only contain options for male or female. The bill would allow a third option, which would likely be ‘X.’
Canadian citizens who do not identify as male or female will soon be able to mark “X” on their passports and other identity documents, the government has said.
John MacArthur and other evangelicals have issued the Nashville Statement which is in support of biblical marriage. A group of over 300 pro-gay Christians and LGBT advocates have published a counter manifesto called Christians United in support of LGBT in direct response to the Nashville Statement. They say that people are resisting the Spirit’s new leading and that the church needs to evolve.
